I was lucky enough to get to study abroad from July 1st, 2023 to August 10th, 2023 in Innsbruck, Austria. This was truly a one of a kind experience. Compared to the study abroad program I did after my freshman year of college this program was significantly more independent. I lived in a dorm with the other 250 students also completing the program. One of the unique aspects of this program is that it is through the University of New Orleans, but kids from all different universities participate. I made many friends that not only go to the University of Georgia but also Auburn, Alabama, LSU, and many more. Each weekend most students would travel somewhere new, but it was completely up to us to plan these trips. Over the six weeks I became very accustomed with the public transportation systems, booking places to stay in foreign countries, and traveling with a group.
I took two course during my time in Innsbruck. The first was an environmental history course. As part of this course our class went on a field trip to hike one of the few remaining glaciers. The other course I took was a cultural anthropology course. For this class we went on a field trip to a Roma Gypsy camp. We had the chance to hear first hand from them about their experiences living in Austria.
These six weeks were very fast pace with all of the travel that we were able to do. One of the unique draws to this program is that we only have class Monday through Thursday, so we would often head straight to the train station from class. During these six weeks I was able to travel to Hallstatt, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Florence, and Interlaken. I am very thankful to have had the chance to explore new places with new people.
